Traffic Stop Leads to Child Porn Charges
People can get arrested for child porn crimes in various ways. While many people are arrested after months-long investigations, sometimes a traffic stop can lead to an arrest.
Joshua Jobe, a 24-year-old man who provided a fake name at a traffic stop in early April, has been arrested by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office for 50 child porn charges. The Deltona man is facing charges based on sexually explicit images of children found on a phone that he was illegally carrying.
The man was stopped after midnight on April 7 in DeLand after a sergeant saw him riding a bicycle without a light, which is required by law. He told the sergeant that he was a 52-year-old man named James Durben. However, another deputy who later responded to the traffic stop was able to properly identify him as Joshua Jobe, a known sex offender on sex offender probation. He was originally arrested in 2020 for child porn charges as well as engaging in sexual activities with his dog.
That same deputy had conducted several sexual offender checks on Jobe at his residence. The man was violating a 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew that was part of his sex offender status. The man was taken into police custody.
However, the events started earlier that evening. Jobe’s roommate had contacted the sheriff’s office around 9 p.m. to report Jobe had left his electronic ankle monitor behind at his home on Glenwood Road. A deputy responded and saw that the ankle monitor, which was found on the ground, did not appear cut. It was unknown how he removed it, but he was charged with slipping it off.
When the man was arrested, deputies seized his cell phone, as he was not allowed to have a cell phone or even internet access as another stipulation of his sex offender status. Detectives got a search warrant for the phone and found four internet accounts that were not registered with the sheriff’s office. A forensic examination of the phone turned up explicit images of children as well as graphic material involving both children and animals.
Jobe faces multiple criminal charges, including one count of giving a false name, one count of tampering with an electronic monitoring device, two counts of violating probation, four counts of failing to register as a sex offender, and 50 counts of child porn possession. He is currently being held at the Volusia County Branch Jail with no bond set.
