Florida Man Arrested After Using AI to Create Child Porn
Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming more and more popular. People are using it to create various types of content. You can also use AI to create images as well. Unfortunately, people are using it to create illegal images, such as child porn.
That is what a Florida man did. The man was arrested in November for child pornography possession. Many of the images he created himself, which is still illegal. While use of AI is growing rapidly, this is the first case of this kind in Hernando County.
The months-long investigation started in October 2024. That was when detectives from the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office received a tip about a 29-year-old man who was in possession of child sex abuse material. The sheriff’s office executed a search warrant at the man’s home in Spring Hill in November. Deputies interviewed him and arrested him after he admitted to posting sexually explicit images of children on social media.
Investigators discovered more images on Boston’s phone in January. Several of these files contained sexual abuse, and six others were generated using AI.
The man was already in jail without bond, and is now facing additional charges of child porn possession and generated child porn. The sheriff’s office has zero tolerance for child porn possession. All tips are investigated and anyone who possesses this type of material will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
The Rise of AI-Generated Child Abuse Imagery
Child abuse images created by AI has increased dramatically in the past year. In October 2023, there were more than 20,000 AI-generated images on the dark web forum. The issue has escalated since then and the images have started to evolve.
These incredibly realistic images are considered deepfakes, as they are not 100% real. Videos of children in sexually explicit positions are made using AI tools that add the face or likeness of a real person. Increasingly, deepfake videos shared in dark web forums feature adult pornographic videos and add a child’s face using AI tools. Perpetrators increasingly use AI models to generate new imagery of known victims and even famous children.
Rapid technological advancements in AI models/generators is allowing people to generate hardcore scenarios. They can legally download everything they need to generate the images. They can then produce an unlimited number of images offline without being detected.
Technology has brought about so many AI tools to allow people to edit generated images until they look exactly like what a person desires. Because of this, most AI child sex abuse material found online is so realistic enough that it’s hard to tell the difference.
