Florida Man Faces 30 Counts of Child Porn Possession

Looking at pornography is acceptable (although maybe frowned upon) when the nude images are of consenting adults. However, when the images are of minors, the law comes in with an effort to protect these victims.

A Florida man was recently arrested for possessing child porn images, also known as child sex abuse material. The 46-year-old man from Fort Walton Beach was arrested by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and now faces 30 counts of possession of child sexual abuse material, as well as one count of transmission of child sexual abuse material and one count of using a two-way communication device to facilitate a felony.

The investigation began in October. That was when agents discovered a file sharing network user downloading and transmitting child pornography files. Investigators were able to identify the man and executed a search warrant on his home.

While searching the house, agents found thousands of files containing child sexual abuse. The subjects were young children as young as 7 years old. The man was arrested and booked into the Okaloosa County Jail. He remains there and is being held on a $315,000 bond.

Transmission of Child Sexual Abuse Material

The transmission of child sexual abuse material refers to the act of distributing, sharing, or sending explicit content involving minors, or those under the age of 18. This transmission can occur through various means such as:

  • Online platforms: Social media, file-sharing websites, messaging apps, email, or cloud storage services.
  • Peer-to-peer networks: Direct sharing between individuals via specific software or networks.
  • Physical distribution: Passing around printed photos, videos, or storage devices such as USB drives.

Due to advancements in technology, online child porn offenses are increasing in scale and complexity. Individuals who seek to sexually exploit children through CSAM can do so from anywhere in the world by using digital devices and the internet.

Modern smartphones are the digital device of choice. They serve as the ideal child exploitation tool for offenders, as they can be used to:

  • Photograph, record, or watch live child sexual abuse
  • Store sexually explicit images
  • Access child sex abuse material stored remotely
  • Connect with victims and other offenders
  • Receive and distribute and receive child sex abuse material through an endless variety of applications

In virtually all jurisdictions, the transmission, possession, or creation of child sexual abuse material is a severe criminal offense. Laws aim to protect children from exploitation and abuse, as the sharing of such material fuels ongoing abuse. The production of child sexual abuse material creates a permanent record of the child’s victimization.
