Police Volunteer Faces Child Porn Charges

When a person works in law enforcement, you would think they would be aware of the laws they need to follow. Even if a person is a volunteer for a police department, they should know that crimes such as child porn possession are wrong. However, not everyone thinks clearly all the time.

This was the case for a 75-year-old man from Florida. The man, who served as a police volunteer with Sebastian police, was recently arrested for possessing child porn images.

Police searched his home after they received a notification from the Department of Justice Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force Program. In March, the agency had alerted authorities that child porn images had been downloaded to a computer linked to the man’s home address.

Detectives searched the man’s home on Limerick Court and found numerous images of children ages 4 to 8 years old in sexually explicit poses. The man was arrested and now faces 50 child porn possession charges.

The man was booked into Indian River County Jail. No bond information was available. The man is now prohibited from volunteering with the police department.

The man has been a volunteer with Sebastian police for almost two years. He worked mostly in traffic control or in clerical roles. As a police volunteer, the man had no direct contact with children.

Why Are People Attracted to Child Porn?

Viewing child porn is illegal. Children are being sexually abused in order to produce these images and they are not legally able to consent. They are being traumatized and manipulated.

Why are people attracted to child porn? Many people claim that they stumbled upon videos of a child being sexually abused. While they were disgusted with what they saw, they couldn’t stop thinking about what they had seen. They started looking for more and became addicted. It’s also possible that people who were sexually abused as children find themselves searching for content that mimics their own abuse.

In any case, the best course of action is to question your behavior. Take control of your illegal internet viewing behavior before it gets out of hand. Take steps to monitor what you are doing online. You should see a counselor or therapist if you feel as though you are addicted and are having trouble keeping yourself from viewing these images. Therapists can use various clinical strategies to help, such as including cognitive behavioral therapy, group treatment, insight and relapse prevention.
