Task Force Rescues 90+ Victims From Trafficking, Exploitation

January is National Human Trafficking Prevention Month. Human trafficking is a crime that affects so many lives in Florida and across the nation. Florida ranks third in the nation for human trafficking cases, so law enforcement is heavily involved in task forces that get offenders behind bars. However, the state faces many challenges such as tourism, a diverse population, and a vast transportation network.

To combat this, Florida has enacted a task force to fight human trafficking and child exploitation. Last year, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement created Operation Lightshine, a program consisting of local, state, and federal agencies.

The task force is using cutting-edge technology to speed up investigations. Since its inception in January 2024, the Intercept Task Force has opened more than 1,000 cases. These cases have led to 63 arrests and 90 victims rescued.

This technology includes artificial intelligence (AI). AI tools are helping investigators get through large amounts of data quickly. There is so much digital evidence involved, such as social media chats and cell phone data. AI is cutting case times from weeks to days.

Unfortunately, trafficking and child exploitation cases have been steadily increasing since 2014. That was when the internet exploded in popularity. Predators and children alike have access to cell phones, making these crimes more likely to occur. These crimes tend to occur primarily on social media, particularly Snapchat.

The concept of this task force is to get law enforcement the resources they need to fight these crimes, and AI has been a huge help in this regard. The program helps local agencies work with partners in other countries to track offenders all over the world.
